INFORMATION REQUESTED FROM CHILDREN UNDER 13 YEARS OF AGE

We are a general audience web site with a children's section. Because we understand that our entire web site may be appealing to children, we seek to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA").

WHAT INFORMATION MAY BE COLLECTED

Personally Identifiable Information

We have a children’s section of our general PRC web site. The children’s section, at this time, does not collect personal information from children. However, some general sections of the PRC web site do collect personal information when users register with our site, submit questions, or request information from PRC or its partners. We recognize that children under the age of 13 may wish to register on our site and participate in the services that our site offers. Therefore, we have made all sections of the PRC web site that collect personal information COPPA-compliant.

In order sign up for either PRC membership, a user will be required to provide his or her name, address, phone number, date of birth, and e-mail address. We also ask registrants to provide information on their interests. This information is optional. If the individual requesting the membership is under the age of thirteen, based upon the information provided by that user at the time of registration, the individual will be prevented from providing the personally identifiable information until PRC obtains verifiable parental consent from the child’s parent or guardian.

From time to time we may offer online sweepstakes or contests; surveys; or polls on the PRC web site. PRC will either obtain prior parental consent prior to collecting personal information from children under the age of 13 wishing to participate in these events, or PRC will prevent children under the age of 13 from entering. We will never collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without first obtaining the parent’s consent. We also will never require more information from children that is reasonably necessary to participate in the relevant activity.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information

Cookies

A "cookie" is a small text file that a web site can place on your computer's hard drive. The cookie transmits this information back to the web site's computer that, generally speaking, is the only computer that can read it. PRC may use cookies to help us recognize you when you come back to our site. We may also use cookies to help us track traffic on our site. This information may be aggregated in an anonymous manner. This will help us better tailor our site and provide you with offers that we think may be of interest to you. We do not link cookie information to personally identifiable information.

IP Addresses and Environmental Variables

PRC may also collect information through IP addresses or environmental variables. An "IP address" is a number used by computers on the network to identify your computer so that data can be transmitted to you. "Environmental variables" include, among other things, the domain from which you access the Internet, the time you accessed our web site, type of Web browser and operating system or platform used, the Internet address of the web site you left to visit PRC, the names of the pages you visit while at our web site, and the Internet address of the web site you then visit. We collect all of this information to allow us to detect broad demographic trends, to provide information tailored to your interests and to enhance your experience on PRC’s web site. This information may be aggregated in an anonymous manner.

How information May Be used

Prior to collecting or using any personally identifiable information from a child under the age of thirteen, PRC is required by COPPA to obtain parental consent. Should PRC seek parental consent, the child’s parent will receive an e-mail request notifying them of the child’s request. PRC’s request for parental consent will explain how PRC collects, uses, and shares children’s personal information. Parents will be given the opportunity to opt out of: (1) their child’s participation in any activity; and (2) what information, if any, PRC may share about the child. If a parent opts his or her child out, no information about that child will be retained by PRC. However, the child may be prevented from participating in certain activities that require personal information.

Under COPPA, if a parent provides consent to PRC’s collection and use of the child’s information, PRC may release that information to others who use it only to provide internal support for PRC. Therefore, if you permit PRC to collect and use your child’s information, you are also permitting PRC to allow those third parties that provide support for the internal operations of PRC to access your child’s information (collectively, "Agents"). These Agents are bound to maintain the confidentiality and security of the data, and do not use in it any way other than to administer our web site and databases.

Personally identifiable information collected from children will be used to respond to user requests or to provide children with information requested in a one-time request, such as if a child submits a question. Personal information collected to comply with a child’s one time request will be discarded after PRC has responded to the child’s request. Non-personally identifying information will be used to help us improve and update our site based on recorded use.

The PRC shares personally identifiable information collected from children under the age of thirteen with third parties, such as the Paralysis Task Force and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Because the PRC is administered by the Christopher Reeve Foundation, and receives funding and other services from parties such as the CDC, we - by necessity - must share information with our partners. Parents will always be provided with the opportunity to opt-out of PRC sharing the child’s information with these third parties however, if the parent does opt-out, we may need to discard the child’s information all together because of the way our internal structure is set up. We never sell your child’s personal information, or share it with parties other than those parties with whom we closely work.

In the event that our policies with respect to sharing children’s information change, you will have a choice as to what information about your child, if any, is shared.

If you wish to review your child’s information, have your child’s information changed or deleted, or refuse to allow any further collection of the child’s information, please contact us by sending an e-mail to prc@crpf.org.
