Native Americans with Disabilities

According to the most recent Census, 4.3 million, or 1.5 percent of the total U.S. population, reported they were American Indian and/or Alaska Native. Through its “Survey of Income and Program Participation” (SIPP), the Census Bureau also reports Native Americans as having the highest rate of disability at 21.9 percent.

While Native Americans show the highest rate of disability in the U.S., the Americans with Disabilities Act specifically does not cover tribes.  Geographic isolation (living on tribal lands) and limited resources can add to an already challenging situation. It is therefore beneficial for disabled Native Americans to plug-in to organizations, programs and opportunities that can provide assistance.

Some regional agencies and programs supply additional access as well as helpful information for Native Americans with disabilities.  For example, The House of Development (HUD) offers housing assistance for Native Americans through its Office for Native American Programs.  In addition, The Rural Institute funded by the Federal Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) belongs to a network of programs that works to increase the independence, productivity and inclusion of persons with disabilities into the community.  There may just be a local chapter in your area.  Check out the resources listed in the right hand column of this page for more resources.
