Parenting with a Disability

It has been said that being a parent is the toughest job there is, but what about being a parent with a disability?  Tougher?  Probably so, but surely not impossible, especially in today’s world.

Technology has certainly made child-rearing easier with everything from microwave ovens to DVD players.  In addition, there are a multitude of resources for the over nine million parents living with disabilities in the U.S.  And, for couples wishing to have children or adopt, advocacy groups, nonprofits and some government agencies can provide valuable information to make the process a bit smoother.

Support groups such as Parents with Disabilities Online and Parents on Wheels provide an excellent safe and social network for disabled parents.  A number of private organizations also offer resources, such as counseling, training and online chat rooms.
