Transportation

Getting from point A to point B can be smooth sailing or a bumpy ride depending on your unique set of circumstances.  To make your journey as easy as possible, know all you can in advance about the transportation means, travel conditions and your final destination.  If you are using public transportation, investigate all the details of the trip including departure and arrival schedules, number, if any, of stops, the weather and, most importantly, how accessibility is addressed.

Transportation vehicles are required to be accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There are minimum guidelines and requirements for accessibility standards which are issued by the Department of Transportation. For example, rapid rail vehicles and systems must provide handrails and stanchions to assist safe boarding, on-board circulation and seating and standing assistance. While it is not necessary, it is always helpful and empowering to know these requirements ahead of time.

Buses, trains, boats, subways, airplanes and any form of transportation in the US must by law accommodate passengers with disabilities.  Does this mean that your experience is going to be untroubled or that the transportation vehicle is going to be comfortable and state of the art?  Not necessarily.  But, with enough planning and preparation, you’ll be sure to increase your chances for a pleasant trip.  Happy trails!
